bacon melt

Nothing beats melty for a quick solution to dinner during these hectic weeks at the beginning of the school year. We decided to experiment with Gouda cheese for easy yet very tasty melty sandwiches.

If you’re going to have a great sandwich you must use great bread, we chose a wonderful Boule made by Taste of Scandinavia for our sandwich bread.

Simply toasting the bread didn’t seem like a good idea for a perfect melty sandwich so we settled on spreading the outside of the bread slices with Hellman’s Mayonnaise and cooked until a beautiful golden brown in a large non-stick frying pan or griddle.

Our first melty sandwich effort was using Smoked Gouda on our golden crusted bread. We decided to shred the Smoked Gouda but slicing really gave us the same lovely melty result as shredding so save yourself having to clean the shredder. After cooking the exterior sides of our sandwich with the mayo we topped the bottom slice of bread with our shredded cheese and topped with the other slice of bread and baked in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 15 minutes until our cheese melted. The smoky flavor of the Gouda was sensational with a side of sliced Minnesota grown apples.

Next melty experiment was with traditional Gouda. We sliced our Gouda and placed the slices evenly over the bottom of our sandwich slice of Boule and placed the top of our sandwich over the sliced cheese. Fifteen to twenty minutes later there is a delightful melty sandwich. Next time we do this at home a small cup of tomato soup would be a wonderful accompaniment to this little beauty.

For our next melty sammy we decided to bring out the bacon! We placed our bacon slices on racks on a baking sheet and baked at 350 degrees until cooked.

Again slicing the gouda and placing on our golden crusted bread and then topping with a couple of slices of bacon and placed back in the oven until our cheese was melted. This is definitely our favorite melty from our experiment!

We decided our experiment had to include a spicy melty sandwich and our solution was to go to the Bacon Jam!

This melty combo of Gouda and Bacon Jam is a terrific melty, packed with lots of flavor and gooey goodness. It probably wouldn’t be a sandwich that younger kids would enjoy but the teens who put Frank’s hot sauce on everything might really enjoy this!

With the exception of the Bacon Jam all of these melty wonders came together very fast, making them a perfect meal for your busy household! Remember to grab some Gouda next time you’re in the store and don’t forget – we deliver!
